The timetable, made known last year, for the release of the Version 6.0 of the free Unix variant FreeBSD has been corroborated of late. As of today the scope of functions is no longer to be increased and bug-fixing is to become the main priority. Before this task has been completed the developers are loath to release the new version. They do seem to be confident, however, of being able to eliminate all problems by August.
A snapshot of the current state of development designed to inspire testing is available as ftp. It will probably in future be brought up to date every week or fortnight. With the 5.5 release announced for September the developers are aiming to make the migration from 5.x to 6.x, which they rate as not difficult, easier still and round off the 5.x-series. For all people without the resources for migration, 5.x version support has been promised at least until 2007.
